She was born Sept. 22, 1916, in Ripley County, the daughter of Charles and May Belle Cripe Matthews. She attended Butlerville High School and was a graduate of Columbus Beauty School. She was a hairdresser in Bloomington for several years and then owned and operated Zelpha's Beauty Shop in Vernon. She also worked at Madison State Hospital, retiring from there as a housekeeper. She was a member of Graham Baptist Church, a former member of Butlerville Chapter 518 of the Order of the Eastern Star, and a founding member of the Southern Indiana Appaloosa Horse Club. She enjoyed all animals, especially horses and dogs.
She is survived by one daughter, Jean E. Andres of Dupont; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Carol Underwood; and two sisters, Virginia Cooper and Edith Gardner.
In keeping with her wishes, her body has been donated to the Indiana State Anatomical Board Education Program.
There will be no service or visitation.
