James T. "Jim" Churchwell, 87, of Sanford, passed peacefully at his home on Tuesday, Dec. 7th, 2021.

Born in Leakesville, MS, Nov. 18, 1934, "Jimmie" was the son of the late George Franklin Churchwell, Sr. and Lucy Churchwell. Jim attended the University of Texas after high school but placed his education on hold when he enlisted in the US Army in 1953. He was sent to the DMZ during the Korean War and earned the rank of PFC before his honorable discharge in 1956. Upon his return, Jim went on to complete his BS in Marketing/Business Administration from the University Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg in 1959.

In the early 60s, Jim moved to North Carolina. It was here that his first daughter, Renee, was born. In 1975, Jim met the love of his life, Sylvia, and finally convinced her to marry him in December of 1977. Their union immediately gave him two more daughters, Beth and Jamie. Jim and Sylvia happily shared 40 years of marriage before her passing in April of 2018.

Jim was known as quite a character who made everyone chuckle. He was extremely social and had a gift of gab which naturally led him into a career in sales. He was always a sharp dresser and was very personable. In 1979, Jim and his family moved to Sanford when he partnered with a friend to purchase in the Mid-State Ford dealership. Selling his part of the dealership a few years later, Jim continued to manage car dealerships until his retirement.

Jim enjoyed the water for all of his life whether he was boating, water-skiing, or barefooting at Badin Lake with the "River Rats" or lounging in the sand at North Myrtle Beach. Horses also provided Jim much recreation and enjoyment. He liked riding horseback and riding in his horse-drawn buggies. He gained great pleasure from teaching his children and grandchildren how to ride, sharing his interests with them.

In addition to his parents, Jim was predeceased by his loving wife, Sylvia Johnson Churchwell; and daughter, Elizabeth "Beth" Tyson Manos; his four siblings, brother, Hillery L. Churchwell, brother, George F. Churchwell, Jr., sister, Mona Churchwell Castillow, and brother, Stacy E. Churchwell. He is survived by his daughters: Jamie Childress (Tim), and Renee Green (David), and son-in-law, Dan Manos. He was the grandfather of Jessica, Alex, Katie, Jordan, Ryan, Marissa, Sydney, Hunter and Lexus and his 5 great grandchildren: Vivienne, Killian, Annabelle and twins Bodhi and Nijah.

A funeral service will be held at the Lemon Springs UMC, 7225 Lemon Springs Rd. Sanford on Saturday at 11:00. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service.

Services are entrusted to Miller Boles Funeral Home.
