James H. Atkinson

James H. Atkinson, 87, of Crab Orchard, died Wednesday, July 3, at his home, following a long illness.

Born Dec. 6, 1903, at Thayer, he was the son of the late Joseph A. and Sadie Amick Atkinson.

Mr. Atkinson was a retired assistant superintendent of the East Gulf Coal Company, a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 156 of Coal City and a member of the Bethel Freewill Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Addie E. Atkinson; twins, James Ray and Janice Faye Atkinson; a daughter, Betty Meadows; five brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include a son, Carl Atkinson of Stafford, Va.; two daughters, Alice Spencer of Crab Orchard and Lahoma Hart of Newport News, Va.; a brother, Frank Atkinson of Coal City; a sister, Wanda Burch of Jacksonville, Fla.; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity, with the Rev. Cecil Bolen Officiating.

Friends may call 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
