John is the son of John R. & Hannah (Benedict) Winfrey. He married Rachael Marie Davis on December 1, 1835 in Casey County, Kentucky.

OBITUARY: Brother John B. Winfrey was born in Kentucky, Jan. 18, 1810: was married to Rachel Davis of Lincoln County, Kentucky. Dec 1, 1835.

He was converted when almost seventeen years old, and united with the Methodist Church and was an active member the rest of his long life. He was licensed to exhort by James King about the year 1837, and was a warm, useful exhorter, but never asked for license to preach, nor did he ever speak of his public effort as preaching, but felt that his special work in the church was that of exhortation. In his youth, and while in the strength of his manhood, he had much of the revival fire about him, and many no doubt were brought to Christ through his instrumentality. He was ever ready to lend a helping hand to his pastor in protracted meetings and was faithful to visit the sick and to minister to their souls and bodies as far as he could. He perhaps knew better how to treat persons that were considered incurable by the best physicians and thus relieved much suffering, and made the hearts of many to rejoice because they were restored to soundness of body, or relieved at any rate of pain, for some had let it run on so long that it made them cripples for life.

He was the father of six children, three of whom are still living, with their aged mother, to mourn their loss.

He was very much afflicted for several years before his death, but was not confined to his bed. He died suddenly Jan. 9, 1897.

May God comfort the aged and bereaved wife and the surviving children and them all to heaven at last.
