Thomas "Tom" Eglin was 26 when he was shot and killed by two holdup men just east of New Orleans in the town of Gentilly, LA. Eglin was the flagman aboard the L.&N. "fast through" passenger train. Two of the passengers donned masks and one pulled the bell cord. The conductor went to investigate and was robbed at gunpont. Another passenger was being robbed when Eglin approached the gunman from behind. He apparently was unaware of the robbery in progress. The gunman turned and fired, the bullet striking Eglin in the side. The gunmen then jumped from the train with a total of a little more than $20.
