Although the 1900 census shows Maud's birth location as Michigan, her father is shown living in Elkhart County, IN in both the 1870 & 1880 census.
Maud's death certificate lists her mother as Lydia Stutsman.
Hiram married Lydia Stutsman in 1869 and Mary Cripe in 1879. Perhaps Lydia died after giving birth to Maud and that is why Maud was adopted.
All the children listed in the 1880 census for Hiram, except for Charles, must be from Hiram's first marriage.
