Doris Jean Gasque
November 19, 1931 - November 21, 2021
Columbia, South Carolina - Doris Jean Gasque died after an extended illness on November 21, 2021 at the age of 90.
Doris was born in Marion, SC, the daughter of Paul Jones Altman and Alpha Harriett Altman. She was a 1950 graduate of Marion High School where she played basketball, and a 1954 graduate of Winthrop College. At Winthrop, Doris was the art editor of her senior year school yearbook. Doris married John Leon Gasque Jr. in 1954 and, after her husband's service in the Air Force, they moved to Columbia. They were married for 32 years until his death in 1986. Doris was a biology teacher at Airport High School in West Columbia for 25 years, retiring in 1992.
Surviving are a daughter, Cynthia Gasque Chastain (Roy) of Acworth, Georgia; a son, John L. Gasque III (Katherine) of Columbia, SC; two grandchildren, Alexandra Chastain and Logan Chastain and a step grandchild, Lettie Woods. Doris also is survived by sisters, Sandra Paulette Altman Cantey (Bob) of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Frankie Carol Altman Phipps of Joanna, SC, and three nephews and two nieces. She was predeceased by a sister, Phyllis Olivia Altman Roberts.
Doris was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother.
A private graveside service was held at Woodridge Memorial Park on Friday, November 26, 2021. Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel assisted the family.
