James "Jim" P. Bewley, 75, of West Chester, passed away on Saturday, November 20th, 2021. He died of natural causes in his home, a house filled with the many bowls, rugs, ornaments, and other projects that were part of his prolific artistic output. He died confident in the love of his wife Paula (Clarke) Bewley, his family, and his many wonderful friends. His enormous talent, good humor, and kindness will be missed immensely.
Born at Bryn Mawr Hospital in 1946, Jim was the son of the late John and Norma (Janney) Bewley. He grew up in Newtown Square and attended Marple Newtown High School. Jim enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Vietnam War. Thinking he'd see less combat, he signed up to play trumpet in the Army Band. Unfortunately for Jim, the band was stationed on the front lines. His time overseas was as dangerous as it was colorful, but it was there that he forged a series of friendships with fellow musicians that would last his entire life.
Jim began his apprenticeship in the carpentry trade after Vietnam and settled in West Chester, purchasing a historic stone house on Phoenixville Pike that he devoted his life to rebuilding and improving. He worked long hours as a carpenter on projects big and small throughout the Greater Philadelphia region. In all pursuits, both professionally and personally, he brought his considerable skill and thoughtful attention.
A restless spirit, Jim was seldom able to be without a project. He enjoyed wood turning, restoring antique cars, rug hooking, antiquing, gardening, music, and working on his home. His interests led him to become a valued member of several organizations including the Chester County Antique Car Club, American Association of Woodturners, Keystone Woodturners, Chester County Craft Guild, and the Brandywine Rug Hooking Guild. In 2014 hundreds of his wooden birdhouse ornaments were featured at Longwood Gardens as part of their annual Christmas Display. He received numerous regional honors and national awards for his excellence in antique car restoration.
In addition to his wife Paula, Jim is survived by his son: James D. Bewley, husband of Kellie Nichols, of Brooklyn, NY, granddaughter: Vera; and his siblings: Nan Kent and John Bewley and their families. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Smith.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 27, 2021 at 10 AM at James J. Terry Funeral Home, 736 E. Lancaster Ave., Downingtown. A visitation will be held at the funeral home from 8:45-9:45 AM. Interment will follow at Valley Forge Memorial Gardens. The family requests that all guests in attendance wear face coverings, regardless of vaccination status.
