The tracts of land upon which the Arbuckles and Custards settled in Mercer County were east of where Sheakleyville now stands. In the History of Mercer County By: L.H. Everts & Company, 1877, page 66 the families, state that their ancestor, John Arbuckle, died of yellow fever in the War of 1812, and that he was a brother-in-law to John Custard, and that but one child was born in each of the families, and that Arbuckle's child was a son, and Custard's a daughter. The former, James Arbuckle was born, May 13th, 1799, in Old Sandy Creek Township. Custard's daughter was several years older, and subsequently married Charles Montgomery. Richard Custard, an old man, the father of John Custard accompanied his sons to the township and died about 1810 after selecting a spot for his grave, on land now owned by James Caldwell, and still used as a burying-ground. John Arbuckle's warrant-survey was not taken out until September 16th, 1801, more than four years after the land had been settled. Bears were very numerous at the time of the settlement, and, it is related, that one day, while Mrs. Custard was at work in the milk-house, near the cabin, one of the brutes came to the clearing, and deliberately commenced eating a large sow, which was wallowing in the mud nearby. The squealing attracted the attention of the good woman, who, instead of running away and hiding, or climbing a tree, caught a rail from the fence, and belabored bruin so severely that he was glad to drop his dinner and scamper for the woods.

Catherine was the widow of John Arbuckle who died about 1818 leaving a minor child named James. According to the court records a guardian was appointed for James in 1819. In 1827 James was appointed administrator of John's estate in 1833 James Arbuckle sold the land that his father had. His father John had received the land on a warrant dated 16 September 1801. His son stated in the deed when he sold the land that he was the only son and heir of John Arbuckle.

Caldwell Cemetery is located 1/4 mile off the old Perry highway, behind a farmhouse, about one mile from the original land that Hamilton Armour Sr. first settled on. Still in use as a burying- ground today, the cemetery was originally on land once owned by James Caldwell. The Cemetery for decades was not maintained and was allowed to be very overgrown. It has obviously been vandalized as many of the markers are missing. Only one headstone can be found that is dated in the 1830's. In the History of Mercer County, Richard Custard is recorded buried in Caldwell Cemetery in 1810. Also, the Mercer County courthouse records show John Custard, Charles Montgomery, Elizabeth (Montgomery) Hogue and John Hogue her husband and many others family members are also resting in this private cemetery.
