Enlisted August 5. 1862 mustered in as Private September 4, 1862 with Company B. 7th Rhode Island Infantry transferred from Company B. old organization October 28, 1864
wounded April 2, 1865 at Petersburg Virginia gunshot wound of the right thigh mustered out June 9, 1865.

After the war he was admitted to U.S. National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in the State of Maine on November 13, 1895; age 50 when admitted and that record states he died while he was on furlough from the home at Rhode Island on March 27, 1901.

He applied for Pension as Invalid on May 16, 1866; app# 108,282
His Widow Margaret applied for his pension on October 4, 1901 app# 749,563.

Richard was the son of John Carpenter (b. abt 1805 Ireland - d. abt 1845/1850 RI) and Mary Newman (b. abt 1805/1810 Ireland - d. 15 Dec 1891 RI).
He married Margaret Moran on 8 Apr 1860 in Cranston, Providence, RI. They had Marietta, Catharine, Sarah, John F., Ellen, Richard, Charles and William E. .
