LORNE MCDOUGALL KILLED INSTANTLY IN AUTO ACCIDENT -- Skull fractured When Car Overturns on U.S. 2 West of Cooks -- Was Son of Prominent Germfask Family; Companion Not Badly Hurt --One of the saddest auto fatalities of the year occurred early Monday evening when Lorne McDougal, 26 son of Mr. and Mrs. Angus McDougal of Germfask met sudden death when his ford roadster overturned in a ditch at one of the curves east of Garden Corner on U.S. 2 West of Cooks. Leo Settergren, also of Germfask, was with McDougal but did not suffer any serious injury although he was cut and badly bruised.

Just how the accident happened will never be known. Settergren was asleep in the car when the crash came. It is generally believed that McDougal must have fallen asleep momentarily, at least. Tracks in the road show that he had swerved from one side to another before overturning. The youths had attended a dance at Pine Grove and were on their way home when the fatality occurred. An examination by Dr. G.A. Shaw revealed that McDougal's death was instant and was caused by a severe skull fracture. His body was otherwise badly bruised.

the car was destroyed by fire. Officers visited the scene of the accident Monday and found that three tires which had not been damaged, had been stolen from the car together with many other parts of the automobile.

McDougal's death cast a cloud of gloom not only over his home community but like wise the entire county. He was well known and had many friends in Manistique. His parents are pioneer residents of Germfask and he was assisting his father in the operation of the latter's general store.

The deceased is survived by his parents, twp sisters, Mrs. Jack Heath and Mrs. John Lustilla, both of Germfask, and a brother, Herbert of Detroit.

The many beautiful floral offerings and the large attendance at the funeral were a tribute of the high esteem in which the young man was held. Many friends of the family from Manistique attended including all members of the board of supervisors, now in session, and county officials. The boy's father was formerly a member of the county board.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the family residence in Germfask with Rev. Alvin Doten of Marquette officiating. interment was made in Fairview cemetery in Manistique.

Gunnarson & Kefauver had charge of the funeral.
