William Sherman Adsit, 96, of Milford passed way at Creasy Springs Legacy Health Care, Lafayette, Indiana on November 7, 2021. William was born on August 2, 1925, the son of Sherman and Mayme Bramer Adsit.
He attended Milford Schools, graduating from high school in 1943. He furthered his education studying industrial electrical wiring and maintenance at Coyne Electrical School in Chicago, Illinois.
On March 15, 1945 he enlisted in the United States Army. He served as a 6th Signal Company wire chief at the 6th Division Headquarters in Busan, South Korea. His service included receiving two overseas bars. He was discharged on January 2, 1947 and returned home to begin farming with his father.
On February 8, 1948 he married Hildegard Benner at St. John Lutheran Church, Schwer, Illinois. They celebrated 73 years of marriage this year just prior to her preceding him in death.
Surviving are two sons, Michael of Plymouth, MI and Andrew (Jill) of West Lafayette, IN. Also surviving are four grandchildren Aaron (Helen) Adsit, Seattle, Washington, Colleen (Michael) Stoltz, Great Falls, Virginia, Eric Adsit, Santa Maria, California, and Lindsey (Robert) Lucenti, Southampton, New York; Great Grandchildren Sophia and William Stoltz, Gracie and Kaleb Adsit, and Harrison and Isabelle Lucenti. He is also survived by many beloved nieces, nephews and their families.
William was active in farming, civic and educational associations. In addition to crop farming he started Adsit Quality Farm Equipment in 1950, selling augers and building grain bins. He retired from farming in 1988. His civic contributions included Milford Fire Department (trustee), Milford Chamber of Commerce, Milford Lions Club, Milford Library Board (President), Milford Small Community Development Pilot Program, American Legion Post #23, Cub Scout Master, and Illinois Scouting District Commissioner. Educational associations included Milford High School Board of Education (President), Iroquois County Area Career Center Board (charter member), and a member of the Illinois School Problems Commission. He was also an active member of St. John Lutheran Church, Schwer.
Personal hobbies included flying and fine wood working. His passion was time spent in his workshop making numerous pieces of furniture and gifts for family and friends. He belonged to the Antique Tool Collectors Association (charter member).
Visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00 am on Tuesday, November 16, 2021 at St. John Lutheran Church, Schwer with the funeral to immediately to follow at 11:00 am. Rev. Steven Jensen will officiate. Burial will be at Sugar Creek Cemetery in Stockland.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Milford Fire Department or St. John Lutheran Church-Schwer.
