Fourth son of William James Scott, Sr. and Sarah McDonnell, William James Scott was educated at Upper Canada College and practiced law. He was one of the original settlers of Battleford, Saskatchewan, and when the Northwest Territories were organized, William was appointed as the first Land Registrar. In 1876/77, William took part in the First Treaty negotiations with the N.W.M.P. and government officials. Soon after, William and Maria 'May' Patricia Gough were married July 25, 1877 at Ottawa, Ontario, and they lived at Battleford where they raised their family of eight children. During the 1885 Northwest Rebellion, William served as Captain of the local Volunteer company, and the family stayed in the N.W.M.P. barracks at the Fort until the danger was over.
Maria Patricia Gough was born Oct. 17, 1856 at Aldershot, England, the daughter of Major Thomas Gough, of the 3rd Battalion Rifle Brigade, and Julia Wilson. Following the death of William, Maria came to Calgary with their children in 1899, so that she was near to her brother, Frank J. Gough, who lived at Midnapore. Maria died in Calgary on July 14, 1936. Although her funeral was in Calgary, there is no mention in Maria's obituary of her place of burial. She was survived by her children: Georgina (Mrs. Walter Phillips) of Kew, Alberta; Frederick and Richard in Calgary; Harold in Medicine Hat; James in Olds; and Frank and Neil in California. She was predeceased by daughter, Ethel, in 1902. Maria was also survived by her brother, Frank.
