MONROE, WI - Carl E. Brachear, Jr. of Monroe, Wisconsin, (formerly Lawrence, Kansas, Capitol Hill, Saipan and Roswell, New Mexico), passed away September 29, 2021 at Monroe Clinic Hospital.
Carl was born February 21, 1939, the son of a corn farmer in the aptly named town of Cornland, Illinois He graduated from Mt. Pulaski High School in 1957 and Eastern New Mexico University in 1984. The eldest of five siblings, Carl grew up on the family farm. He was proud of his midwestern farming roots but developed a love of travel, the mountains and the ocean and went on to become a ship captain in the Merchant Marine and a master scuba diver. He lived in many exotic locations as he followed his dream to travel the world. He spent most of his maritime career in Saipan and Guam and was known as "Captain Carl" to many friends and colleagues in ports around the world.
Carl is survived by his daughters, Lisa Brettin and Katie Jacobson and her husband, Scott; son, David Brachear; brother, Jerry Brachear and his wife, Virginia; sisters, Rita Stoll and her husband, Darrell and Marcy Thompson and her husband, David; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Marguerite and Carl Brachear; his brother, John Brachear; his sons-in-law, Nick Harrington and Jayson Brettin and his infant son, Michael John Brachear.
A small family gathering will be held Saturday November 6 from 1 - 3 p.m. at Pleasant View Nursing Home garden that Carl helped design during his time at Pleasant View.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Friends of Pleasant View Foundation-Special Project Fund. Memorials will go toward maintaining the beautiful garden where Carl spent most of his time the past three years.
