She was born August 31, 1941 in Warsaw a daughter of the late Luther and Dorothy (Moses) Hartwell. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Arcade. She also enjoyed traveling, crafting and spending time with her family.
Mel was the owner and operator of Melanie's Craftime Supplies in Delevan.
She is survived by her husband, Horace "Red" Gasper who she married on February 18, 1961 in Delevan; her children: Jodie (Ellen) Gasper of Cattaraugus, Julie (Don Gallaway) Whitcomb of Arcade, Terry (Gina) Gasper of Yorkshire and Jamie (Jane) Gasper of Chaffee; her siblings: Pauline (late Arthur) Sampson of Rushford, Norman (late Madeline) Hartwell of Delevan, George (late Shirley) Hartwell of Delevan, Janice (late Leo) McKinsey of Myrtle Beach, SC and Paul (late Tarry) Hartwell of Anna, TX; nineteen grandchildren: Chad, Connie, Eric, Desserea, Brianna, Jerod, Justin, Tristen, Tyler, Lance, Luke, Josiah, Brandon, Benjamin, Grace, Vicki, Amanda, Debbie and Jack; also survived by several great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her son, Andie Gasper.
