John Joseph Collopy, 85, died Sept. 28, 2003, in Hillsboro, Ore.

A graveside service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, at Valley Memorial Park Cemetery, Hillsboro.

Born on Oct. 25, 1917, in Chicago, Ill., John Collopy was raised and educated in Chicago. He served in the U.S. Army. He was united in marriage to Cecilia M. on June 29, 1943, in Omaha, Neb. They moved to Hillsboro in 1982 and attended St. Matthew Catholic Church.

As a young adult he worked as an usher in management for Warner Bros. in Chicago, before working as a machinist for Dupont in the Chicago area until he retired in 1979.

He was a quiet man who enjoyed reading, cooking, and watching history shows and the news on television. He not only liked to take his granddaughters to the movies, he even taught them to drive an automobile. he was a real original and a great storyteller. He would make the family laugh.

Mr. Collopy was preceeded in death by his wife, Cecilia Collopy, in 1987, and also by his brother Bernard Collopy. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Bernadette and Dennis Berent of Hillsboro; son Thomas F. Collopy of Beaverton, Ore.; sister Florence Sheehan of Chicago; brother and sister-in-law, James and Alic Collopy of Chicago; brother-in-law Robert MacDonald of Highland, Ind.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Contributions to his memory are suggested to be made to the American Cancer Society.
