Zephaniah was the 2nd of 5 children of John Yearian and Rebecca Gaugh.
He married on December 3, 1861, Du Quoin, Illinois, to Sarah Jane Stroud.
He enlisted on August 1, 1862, in Perry County, Illinois, and served in Company A, 81st Illinois Infantry. He was transferred to Invalid Corps October 16, 1863, and mustered out on July 3, 1865, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Cora Elizabeth b.Jul 11,1879, m1.Jul 2,1900, Ralph Rhett Rathbone, m2.Fred Terry d. Aug 14,1959.
