Census information shows she and her husband remained in the Powell County area until sometime after 1870. He was a farmer. She was a housewife. In 1880 they appear in Rantoul, Champaign County, Illinois. One of the notices of her death states her husband was an earlier settler to the area but it's believed that was a reporting error and should have referenced her parents. Information provided by Mrs. Maxine Battershell in "Champaign County, Illinois, Sesquicentennial Celebration Pioneer Certificate Application 1981" states that Sarah's parents were early settlers to the Stanton Township, Champaign County, Illinois, area, having arrived there in about 1864. Her father died in 1880 so it's possible Sarah and Jefferson moved prior to or during his illness to be closer to the family.
By the time of her death in 1897, Sarah and Jefferson had removed about 15 miles south of Rantoul to a house at 107 Water Street, Urbana Township. Sarah rests in a small, abandoned cemetery on the north edge of Urbana, Champaign County, Illinois.
It should be noted that despite being remarried and widowed for a second time, Jefferson, in his will, left his household goods to: Amanda Case, Katherine Bailey, and Nancy Hudson. His bequeath specifically stated that these were three of his wife Sarah's sisters.
