He was schooled through the Windsor school system, and was educated and trained in furniture conservation and nail-less upholstery, restoring and conserving many antique pieces for Historic Deerfield and other museums. After working for many years as a furniture conservator, master craftsman, and cabinet maker, Mr. Payson worked as a custodian at Leicester Memorial School, Leicester, MA. He was actively involved as a volunteer at the Leicester Primary School, helping to establish the Peaceful Playground. He was "Santa" for the School Volunteers for many years, posing with children for photos.
Mr. Payson completed training at Class A - EN School in Groton, Connecticut as well as Coast Guard correspondence courses. He served in the Coast Guard from 1965 to 1969 as a Lighthouse Keeper at CGSTA Portage, Hancock, Michigan.
Mr. Payson was very well respected for his kind and gentle nature. He was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed gardening, using his metal detector, and he was a lover of animals and nature. He will be sorely missed by the many people who were touched by his friendship. Burial is private. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Contributions can be made to the Leicester School Volunteers, 140 Paxton Street, Leicester, MA 01524.
