Rich was born in Colfax, Wash., in March 1946 to Homer S. Arland and Ann Ripley Arland. In his younger days, he worked in the family business, Arland Motor Company.
He entered the USAF in 1967, serving 20 years in Japan twice, the Azores, England and the United States. Retiring from the Air Force, he worked a short time for SallieMae and then taught electronics to incarcerated males at the State Correctional Institute in Dallas, where he served on the Hostage Negotiation Team. Active in Luzerne County PA Emergency Communications, he received the Key to the City of Wilkes-Barre for assisting in the development of an emergency communications response vehicle.
After retirement, he and his wife migrated south and settled in Dacula, Ga. An avid Ham Radio enthusiast, he had written five books for the American Radio Relay League, the last of which was translated into Chinese.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Pat; daughters, Jessie Schilling (husband, Boyd), Sugar Hill; Maja Arland, Wilkes-Barre; Gwen Stanfield (husband, Kyle); and son, Jamie McGlynn, Amarillo, Texas; granddaughter, Avalon Schilling; and great-grandson, Silas, at home; grandson, Chris Schilling; and great-grandson, Luke, Sugar Hill; granddaughter, Kielan Stanfield (husband, Skyler Ketchum); and great-granddaughter, Eloise, Grand Forks AFB, N.D.; grandson, Llyam McGlynn, Pringle; grandson, Kyle Charles Stanfield II, Columbia, Md.; and grandson, Casey James McGlynn, Shavertown.
A celebration of Rich's life will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Alexander Parks Pavilion 3 (entrance off Old Snellville Road), Snellville, Ga. Please come armed...with funny stories of Rich.
