John Andrew Hickman was the third son of Andrew Jackson and Eliza Hickman. He educated himself as best as he could with the limited opportunities available. He became skilled as a blacksmith in early life. During the Civil War, both he and his brother, Samuel H. Hickman, enlisted on August 3, 1861 in Company "B" of the First Battalion of Colonel Erasmus Irving “Ras” Stirman's Arkansas Cavalry, CSA. John Andrew was elected a First Lieutenant in Company "B" as it was the custom of the Confederacy to elect their own officers rather than appoint them as the Union did. He was wounded and captured on July 4, 1863 in defense of Vicksburg, Mississippi and served two years in prison, mostly in Johnson Island, Ohio. Eventually he was furloughed and paroled from Way General Hospital. He returned to Pope County, Arkansas to his father's farm to regain his health and return to civilian life.
He married Martha Ann Wilson, the daughter of Stith Meade Wilson and Nancy Foster, on August 24, 1865 in Pope, Arkansas. She was the younger sister of his stepmother, Edith Ada "Edy" Wilson Hickman. They had eleven children, but most died at a young age. Their children were:
1. Eadie Parletha Hickman ( 1862-1930) who married Franklin Monroe Dickey on December 5, 1886 in Hector, Pope, Arkansas.
2. Mary Ruby Hickman ( 1870-1904 ) who married George Hillis Ross on December 19, 1886 in Scottsville, Pope, Arkansas.
3. Andrew Scott Hickman ( 1872-1943 ) who married Hattie Ruth Bullock on March 8, 1894 in Pope, Arkansas.
4. Joe M. Hickman ( 1874-1877 ) who died at an early age.
5. Eathie Ann Hickman ( 1877-1881 ) who died at an early age.
6. Athie Hickman ( 1881-1881 ) who was a twin daughter who died at an early age.
7. Addie Hickman ( 1881-1881 ) who was a twin daughter that died at an early age.
8. Martha Angelina Hickman ( 1882-1922 ) who married Arthur Clement Linton, MD on November 4, 1903 in Pope, Arkansas.
9. John Dobson Hickman ( 1885-1908 ) who married Annie B. Williams on March 24, 1907 in Pope, Arkansas.
10. Tillie C. Hickman ( 1889-1891 ) who died at an early age.
John Andrew Hickman is remembered as a good blacksmith, an officer in the Civil War, a Land Surveyor, Pope County Tax Assessor, and above all, as a hard working farmer. He is also remembered for the donation of all materials for Hector's first school which doubled as a Church. He believed strongly in both. He made his home in Scottsville, later in Petty Town Community, and on a good bottom land farm he owned along the Illinois Bayou north of Hector.
