On Thursday morning, October 14, 2021, Martha Ann Segars Chastain, 92,  of Ellijay, Ga, peacefully entered into Eternal Life with her Savior Jesus Christ in Heaven.

She was born to the late Thera Segars and Florence Hutcherson Segars, January 21, 1929 in Sylvester, Ga. and was raised along with her six brothers near Jefferson, Ga. Martha graduated from an 11th grade high school in Jefferson at the age of 17 and went on to receive a BA in 1949 from Berry College in Rome, Georgia.  Upon graduation she began teaching Home Economics in Cobb County where she met and married John K. Chastain, Sr. March 1950. Soon after getting married Martha started a rewarding and challenging career as a Home Economist with Georgia Power traveling around the state teaching, demonstrating the latest appliances and promoting the company. She joined the company as one of only a few females in the workplace and remained there until her retirement in 1985.

Martha and John called Cobb County home for over forty years before relocating to Ellijay to enjoy the beauty and serenity of the mountains. After John's passing in 2006 Martha remained in the home they shared on the mountain and enjoyed many years of family and friends gathering there.

Martha was preceded in death by her loving husband of 56 years, John K. Chastain, Sr.; her parents and siblings; granddaughters, April Jane Graham and Dr. Kristin Michael. Martha is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John K. Chastain, Jr. and Sandra, Ellijay, Ga; and daughter and son-in-law, Sheila Chastain Michael and Tom, Canton, Ga. Grandchildren include Ashley (Kevin) Bradford, Marietta, GA; Heather (Jason) Jackson, Rocky Face, Ga; Seth Graham, Canton, Ga; Jonathan (Caitlin) Chastain, Indian Land, SC; Dan (Amber) Michael, Marietta, Ga; Tony (Ashley) Michael, Cookeville, TN. Great grandchildren include Hannah, Haley and Holly Jackson, Kalyn, Kinsley and Kelsey Graham; Lily, Daphne and Daisy Chastain; Tucker, Evangelynne, Harper and Noah Michael;  Wren, Jonah, Eleanor and Jane Michael; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Martha was blessed with a beautiful voice and she spent many years as a church choir member and soloist.  She also was blessed with a servant's heart which led her to serve not only in the church but in the community. She had many interests and was an avid reader and book enthusiast.  As her health declined, she often said: "When I die, I sure hope they have books in heaven."

Martha lived a long life of faith, love and kindness and those who knew her will remember how she lived her life trusting God through a life of prayer and faith. She loved her Savior, the Lord Jesus, with all her heart, and she loved God's Word. She daily searched the scripture, reading the bible all the way through several times. Martha was a Proverbs 31 woman: "Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her."  She was a powerful prayer warrior, and only heaven knows what a wonderful and eternal impact all her many years of faithful praying have had on her family, her friends, and the world at large.

Family and friends will meet at the Bernhardt Funeral Home at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, October 18th and will travel to Flint Hill Cemetery for a 1:00 graveside service. Rev. Chad Kelly officiating.

Pallbearers are Jonathan Chastain, Seth Graham, Jason Jackson, Kevin Bradford, Dan Michael and Tony Michael.
