Former Shrewsbury resident, Arthur Ryall, loving husband and father of three, and grandfather of six, died at his home in Naples, FL on October 11th.
Art was born on February 21st, 1941 in Washington, D.C. to Donald and Elizabeth Ryall. He graduated from American University in 1966 with a degree in American History. On January 11, 1969, Art married Susan Blair Sharpe, also of Washington. Together they raised two sons, Andy and John, and a daughter, Courtney, in Shrewsbury.
Following a teaching and coaching stint at the Maret School in Washington DC, Art answered President Nixon's call for additional FBI agents in 1968 and went on to serve for 28 years as a FBI agent in Buffalo and Worcester. Following his retirement from the Bureau in May 1997, Art went on to utilize his investigative skills in the private sector, joining Amica Insurance as a Special Investigator in their fraud division. Following his retirement from Amica, Art volunteered at the Shrewsbury Police Department and was responsible for management of the Shrewsbury PD vehicle fleet, which was something in which he took great pride.
Art was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Shrewsbury for over forty years and also served as a Deacon during the 1990s. He had a passion for history, cars and sports, which was bolstered by his encyclopedic and photographic memory of classic automobiles and seemingly the most mundane sporting events. Art was active in youth baseball and soccer coaching for many years, including coaching the Shrewsbury High School boys' junior varsity soccer team in the early 1990s. He remained active in his later years by playing for Shrewsbury's senior league softball team where he enjoyed both the competition and camaraderie.
Art is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Susan (Sharpe) Ryall, formerly of Shrewsbury and now of Naples, FL, and three children; Andy, his wife Jennifer and two children, of Minnesota; son John, his wife
Amy and their two children, of Virginia, and a daughter, Courtney and her husband, Andy Delaney and their two children, of South Carolina.
A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts on Thursday, November 4th at 11:00 AM. The family will host attendees at a luncheon following the ceremony. A small burial service will be held at a later date in Washington, DC. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in the memory of Art Ryall to Camp Cole, a South Carolina non-profit camp and retreat for children and families with illnesses, disabilities, and life challenges to shine.
