While still in school, the Smith family relocated from DeKalb to Covina, California. Smith attended grammar schools and then went to Los Angeles City High School graduating in 1895. Following high school he went to the Leland Stanford Junior University and graduated in 1899. In Autumn of 1900 Smith was sent to the University of Pennsylvania Medical College and received his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1902 and stayed to intern at the University hospital. In 1903 he returned to Los Angeles and was partnered with his father, Everett Russell Smith, a physician. Their practice became very successful and after admitting another partner to the practice, they became known as E.R. Rea Smith & C. W. Anderson Company, physicians and surgeons. Smith became one of the most substantial citizens of Los Angeles investing in real estate in the city and was an active member in civic affairs. Dr. Smith was always a great lover of sports, the outdoors, fishing and hunting. Smith and his wife, the former Georgia Deering Knight, resided at 22 Chester Place with their two children.
