WILLIAM STOTHARD ADAMS IS DEAD!
This announcement will awaken feelings of sadness in the hearts of thousands of the readers of the APPEAL who knew "Uncle Billy," and especially of those who knew him in earlier days, when he ranked high among Memphis financiers. After an illness of several weeks duration, he died yesterday morning at the residence of his brother-in-law, Ex-Attorney-General Eldridge, in this city. The impersonation of honesty and integrity, he was the center of a large circle of warm friends, composed of our best citizens, and through adversity drove him from his high position in the financial world, he adhered strictly to those principles which adorned his character in prosperity. Genial, jovial and confiding, no one entertained aught but kind feelings toward him and sympathy for his misfortunes. He was born in Nashville, reared in Pulaski, and on attainment of manhood he returned to Nashville, where he entered into partnership with Mr. Folwell in the banking business, and soon after the firm of Folwell & Adams, bankers, removed to Memphis, and were prominent in financial circles until about the year 1853 or '54, when the firm was dissolved, since which time Mrs. Adams has not engaged in any business whatever. Why he abandoned the business walks of life is known only to a few of his most intimate friends, but it is enough for the world to know that in his retirement he carried with him the confidence of his friends and a reputation for honesty and integrity without a blemish. Though not identified with any business pursuits, Willy Adams will be missed.
