Reverend Luiz C. Dutra will be the Celebrant of the funeral Mass and will conduct the funeral services, Con Celebrant will be Reverend Edward Degeyter. Interment will be in De La Salle Christian Brothers Cemetery.
Brother Leo was a member of De La Salle Christian Brothers since 1936. Born in St. Louis on May 15, 1919, Brother Leo was the son of the late Dr. Leo Baltz and the former Mary Anna Sorg.
He is survived by his three brothers, Brother Ralph Baltz, FSC, Brother Alfred Baltz, FSC, and Mr. Donald Baltz; and two sisters, Mary Klein and Gladys Quintero. In addition he is survived by a large number of relatives in Arkansas and New Mexico.
Brother Leo entered the Juniorate of the Brothers in Las Vegas, New Mexico in June of 1933 and received the habit of the Brothers on February 1, 1936. He made final profession of vows on June 30, 1944. During his many years in the teaching ministry, Brother Leo taught in eight schools of the New Orleans-Santa Fe Province. In the Diocese of Lafayette, Louisiana, Brother Leo served on the faculty of Cathedral Carmel School from 1981 to 2001. He leaves behind him a legacy of genuine love and care for his students, many friends, and the members of his religious community. He was a gentle soul who welcomed a conversation on many topics in the community, and those who knew him always felt the depth of his convictions. He had a great love of the outdoors spending much of his free time planting, harvesting, and raising chickens, ducks, and rabbits.
Brother Leo was a man who was always willing to lend a helping hand. His greatest desire, during the time of his failing health was, "I wish I could do more to help out the community". When he was told that he needed rest, his response was, "This rest is making me tired". In Chapel, Brother Leo always had an intention in his prayers that included teachers and students, he would pray "That the Holy Spirit may direct the thinking of our teachers and students." He will be missed by his family, friends, and the religious community, but we know that he is now able to lend a helping hand to all of us with his prayers.
Burial in De La Salle Christian Brothers Cemetery.
The members of his religious community wish to thank the staff at Amelia Manor, Hospice of Acadiana, De La Salle, and his many friends who took loving care of him during his illness.
