Thomas heard the shots from Carthage when Joseph the Prophet and his brother (Patriarch) Hyrum Smith were martyred when he was 9 yrs old. He crossed the plains with his family in 1852 a age 17. He rode his pet white ox crossing rivers to guide the other animals.
