Paul Russell Guffey, 96, formerly of Hopkinsville, died peacefully in his sleep at the Western Kentucky Veterans Center in Hanson, on October 6, 2021.

Graveside services with military honors will be 10 a.m. Monday, October 11, 2021, at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West. Hughart, Beard & Giles Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

A native of Alabama, he was born September 25, 1925, in Marshall County. His early life was spent working in his family's lumber and sawmill business. During WWII he served with the 82nd Airborne Division, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment in Europe. His unit participated in the Battle of the Bulge and Operation Market Garden, and liberated the Nazi concentration camp at Wobbelin, Germany, 1945. Following the cessation of fighting, Paul served as a member of the 82nd Airborne Honor Guard at Tempelhof Airport Berlin, Germany.

In 1946, he met and married the love of his life Jessie Lee Machen Guffey, and spent 64 wonderful, happiness-filled years with her.

Following WWII, Paul worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority at Widows Creek Steam Plant, Ala. Additionally for Badgett Construction Company, developing the Saint Lawrence Seaway, for Wright Coal Company, Muhlenberg County, for O.G. Machen Paving Co, Chicago, and in his later years, for Motor Power, Inc., Hopkinsville.

He held Life Memberships in the Military Order of the Purple Heart, VFW Post 6073, Scottsboro, Ala., where he served as Commander, VFW Post 1913, Hopkinsville, and the American Legion, Scottsboro, Ala.

Paul is preceded in death by his parents, Ernest Monroe Guffey and Laura Chessie Wilcox Guffey, his sister Katherine Elizabeth Guffey and his brothers James Edward Guffey and Charles Everett Guffey.

He is survived by his son, Paul Danny (Anna Caryl) Guffey, his grandchildren, Allison Guffey (Shaun) Caldwell and Charles Russell (Mandy) Guffey and his great-grandchildren, Chaney Alind Guffey, Laiken Nichole Guffey, Adler Corinne Guffey and Cannon Russell Guffey.
