According to his WWII Draft registration in 1942, he was born in Sand Spring Township, Pope County, Arkansas. His parents were Pinkney ("Pink") and Dorothy (nee Mattingly) Alexander. He married Martha Matilda "Dollie" Brown in 1907 and, except for a time when they lived in Midland, Oklahoma in 1920, it seems they lived in Montgomery County, Arkansas all their married life.
