Martha was the daughter of James and Lucy Flynn. In 1850, the family was living in Marion Township, Hendricks County, Indiana. She was the 2nd of 5 children listed in the census. The oldest, Michael, was born in Kentucky. The rest, Martha, John, Mason and Angeline, were born in Indiana.

She married Alexander Ramsey on December 20, 1855 in Hendricks County.

In 1860, Martha and Alexander were in their own home and had two children: Mary C., age 3 born in Kentucky, and Samuel A., age 1 born in Indiana.

The 1870 census shows all of their children born in Indiana. The additional children were James, John and Obediah (erroneously listed as a female).

By 1880, Mary was no longer living with her parents and one more child had been born, Annie M., who would die the next year.

In 1900, Martha was widowed and living with her single son, Samuel. The record showed she had 6 children of whom 5 were living. Her place of birth was recorded as Kentucky.

In 1910, the census record shows her living next door to Samuel, who was still single. Her place of birth was again recorded as Kentucky.

In 1920, she was again living with her single son, Sam. Also living with them was her widowed daughter, Mollie Underwood. The record showed her born in Indiana.

She died in Marion Township 2 months after the 1920 census was taken.
