John was the son of Samuel and Catherine Krick Steffy. He married Elizabeth Hartz September 25, 1856 in Tipton, Iowa. They were the parents of Edward Steffy.

John Steffy, one of Iowa Counties old settlers, passed away at his home in Victor last Wednesday (September 17, 1913) morning after a long illness. Funeral services were held at the house Friday afternoon. Interment was in the Koszta Cememtery

His age was about 75 years. Mr Steffy was an old resdent of Honey Creek, having left his farm and moved to Victor about 24 years ago.

He served in the Civil War from 1862 until December 06, 1863 when he came home sick. He was discharged in July of 1864.
