Victim in the Westroads Mall shooting in Nebraska.

On the cusp of a life full of possibilities, 24-year-old Maggie L. Webb had just taken over the responsibility of managing Von Maur, one of Omaha's premier department stores.

Employees quickly came to know the young woman as an energetic, friendly boss with a sparkle in her eyes.

"She was so sweet and so bubbly," said Heidi Cvilikas, the store's cosmetics manager. "People took to her in a kind way."

Webb came to the Omaha store with experience managing a smaller Von Maur, Cvilikas said.

That wasn't surprising, she said, because the company is adamant about cultivating young talent.

Cvilikas, 43, said Webb handled her responsibilities with ease.

"I think she was respected because she had a lot of respect for everyone she dealt with."

Webb was passionate about her job, Cvilikas said, and her office was right behind customer service.

"I'm sure she was in customer service or back in her office," she said. "When she heard everything going on, I can guarantee you that she ran out of her office and right into the whole thing."

Cvilikas said she knew little about Webb's personal life. A spokesman for Von Maur said information about employees would be forthcoming.

When Cvilikas asked Webb recently about her Thanksgiving plans, the new store manager said she didn't have family in town.

"She said she would probably just hang out at her apartment, get a rotisserie chicken at Baker's and two sides for $6.99, or whatever it was.

"And maybe get a bottle of wine and cuddle up with her cat."

Cvilikas recalled Webb's "sparkle, her face."

"Her whole face lit up when she smiled."
