Robert III was born in a wagon bed which had been set on the ground as a shelter for his family. They resided in the Third Ward with the Daniel Browett family, but were also listed as living in the Eleventh Ward under the stewardship of Bishop Abraham Hoagland.

Born at the settlement of Winter Quarters, Nebraska Territory, later known as Florence, Nebraska, which was established as a winter encampment for LDS immigrants waiting to travel west after leaving Nauvoo, Illinois.
Seventh child of Robert Jr. Harris and Hannah Maria Eagles.

In mid July 1846, his father had marched from Council Bluffs/Winter Quarters with the U.S. Army Mormon Battalion in Company E as a private under the command of Captain Daniel C. Davis.
