PHILLS, Dr. George Henry

Dr. George Henry Phills, age 85, of London Ontario passed away on Tuesday, September 14, 2021. He was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia to the late Isaac and Mary Alda Phills on January 3, 1936. He is pre-deceased by his wife Acklema, his brother James and his wife Gerine, his brother Neville, his sister Doreen and her husband Calbert, his sister Gertrude and her husband Ray. He will be dearly missed by his brother Charles (wife Doris), his sister Patricia and his sister-in-law Jackie. He will be remembered fondly by his many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews. He will be missed by his special friend, Marg Hyde, who was a pillar of strength and support for him and the Phills family during the final years of his life.

George was a graduate of King's College in Halifax and Dalhousie where he received his Master's in Clinical Psychology. Next, he studied in England where he completed a PH. D in Clinical Social Psychology at the University of London. It is in London, England where he met his wife, Acklema. George returned to Sydney in 1963 where he was the head of a child guidance clinic. Next, he joined the London Board of Education as a Consulting Psychologist. Later he became the chief psychologist for the London Board. It was during this time that he helped to guide many innovations which included but are not limited to School Teams, Early Identification Process, Social Skills Project, and the Tragic Event Response Team. It is true that he had a tremendous impact on the London Board of Education, but his greatest impact was on the lives of the many students he helped throughout his career. He provided his students with wise counsel and with unfailing support and encouragement. Many parents and students were so grateful for and benefited from his creative approach to their problems and his positive outlook on life.

In retirement, George continued to help others. He had always enjoyed sports which included golf, tennis, and curling. He combined his love for sports and his skill in psychology to do private consulting and counselling. George also loved music. He was a founding member of the Forest City Choir. George was also a person of faith. In his retirement, he was an active member of St. John's the Divine Anglican Church in Arva. On many Sunday mornings, he could be found doing readings and prayers as part of the morning service.

The family would like to recognize the staff at Highview Retirement Residence in London, Ontario for their wonderful care and compassion, especially the staff in Franklin House. George, your family and friends thank you. Yours was a life well lived! Your legacy lives on in all the lives of the people you have touched during your lifetime. Donations to the Alzheimer's Society or to a charity of your choice would be appreciated.

Family and friends will be received for visitation on Tuesday, September 28, 2021 from 12:00 to 12:45 pm at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, 1997 Dundas Street East, London.
