Ewell Charles Austin, son of Charles Macon and Nora (Holloway) Austin, was born January 21, 1916 and departed this life on July 1, 1998, being at the time of his death 82 years, 5 months and 9 days of age.

Ewell grew up on a farm near Cave-in-Rock in Hardin County. He never lost his love for the tilling of the soil, even if it meant only having a garden spot to grow vegetables enough to supply not only his own family, but many of his friends and neighbors as well.

In his early years, he and his brother "Hank" operated a grocery store on Route 1 near Mt. Zion until he was drafted into the army during World War II.

During this time of service to his country, Ewell served in the Field Artillery as a half-track driver in the seventh armored division under the command of General Patton. He participated in the "Battle of the Bulge" which took place in Belgium. This battle was considered to be one of the bloodiest battles of World War II in its entirety.

On August 23, 1947, he was married to Bernice Blakely and from this union was born one son, Blake. Shortly after Blake's birth, they moved to Detroit, Michigan, where he found employment with the General Motors Corporation. This was to be their home for the next 39 years.

After his retirement from General Motors, they returned to Hardin County to be among family and friends. Here, Ewell was an active member of the Eastern Stars, the Lions Club, the Masonic Lodge, the Shriners the Senior Citizens of Hardin County, and the Hardin County Historical Society.

He accepted Christ as his personal savior, and today is rejoicing in the presence of the Lord.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son: Donald; four brothers: Clifford, Paris, Arthur and "Hank"; and two sisters: Mabel and Cleo.

He leaves to mourn his passing his devoted wife, Bernice, to whom he was married for 51 years; his son, Paul from his first marriage and Blake from his second marriage; daughter-in-law: Rebecca; three grandchildren: Melissa, Michael and Meredith; one brother: Hansel; two sisters: Edna and Loree; 17 nieces; 13 nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

"To Those I Love"
As I leave my loved ones, to go along the silent way
Grieve not, nor speak of me with tears
But laugh and talk of me, as if I were still there
And when you hear a song, or see a bird I loved
Please do not let the thought of me be sad
For I am in your midst, just as I've always been
Life's been so good to me
There are so many things I wanted still to do
So many things to say to all of you
Remember that I did not fear
It was just the leaving that was so hard to do
We cannot see beyond, but this I know
Those I loved have made my heaven here below.
