FARMINGDALE/NEW VINEYARD -- Forrest Ridley McDonald Sr. passed away at Franklin Memorial Hospital on Sunday, April 28, 2013, following a long illness.
Forrest was born July 22, 1932, in Wales, Maine, to parents Mildred L. (Polley) and Ashley R. McDonald. He was educated in area schools until joining the Army in 1950. He served in the 187th Airborne during the Korean War, where he received the Purple Heart for injuries received during a jump. On Feb. 6, 1953, he was honorably discharged.

He resided in South Gardiner then Farmingdale for many years, working at Augusta Tank and Culvert.

The last eight months he resided in New Vineyard with his son, Ashley, and daughter-in-law, Sue, where he discovered the joy of Netflix, watching every Roy Rogers film and the like with a smile on his face. He developed an especially close relationship with grandson, Jon, and granddaughter, Billie-Jo.

He is survived by his sister, Rosamond Pinard, of Sabattus; sons Ashley and wife Sue, of New Vineyard, Ronald and wife Tammy, of Augusta, Forrest R. "Johnny" McDonald Jr., of South Carolina, and Steve, of Florida; daughters Catherine Williams and husband John, of South Gardiner, and Carla Bonenfant and husband Ed, of China; and several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Wilma Perkins; and a granddaughter, Jill McDonald.

At his request, there will be no funeral services. A private committal service will be held in Litchfield at a later date.

The family would like to express our deepest thanks to our daughter-in-law, Crystal Davis, for her help in his final days. Thank you also to the staff at Franklin Memorial Hospital for their compassion and caring and the staff of Androscoggin Home Health (Susan and Charlene) for their many trips to our home to care for Forrest. Thanks as well to the staff at the Togus VA hospital, Dr. Greenleaf and our rock, Jane Banks.

Arrangements are by Mid-Maine Cremation Services.
