HENRY B. PHILPOTT was born July 31, 1837 near Connersville, Indiana and died February 25, 1929 at Bentonville, Indiana, burial in Bentonville Cemetery. Henry was the 7th child of WILLIAM and CECELIA (Martin) PHILPOTT and descendant of WILLIAM and MARY ANN (Davis) PHILPOTT.
Henry was brother of; Martin, John, Nancy, William & Cecelia.
Henry served in the Civil War. He was living at Mt. Comfort, Hancock County, Indiana when he enlisted on August 12, 1862 in Company "D" 79th Regiment, Indiana Vol. Infantry, (Union) under the command of Captain James M. Buchanan. He was honorably discharged June 7, 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee. His description was given as 5' 9" tall, 157 pounds, fair complexion, gray eyes, and brown hair.
Records show that he marched through Kentucky in the fall of 1862 after Bragg's Army. Was in the Battle of Stone's River. He was captured at the Battle of Chickamauga September 20, 1863. He was released in March 1865 and rejoined his command in May or June 1865. At the Battle of Murphreesboro, Tennessee, Henry was knocked senseless by a shell bursting by his head and stayed on the field all night, unconscious among the dead. His left eye bled and left him partially blind. He was not on duty for several days and detailed as a cook for about six months. Some who signed Henry's pension application were neighbors who served in the same Company with him were, JOHN STANLEY, WILLIAM HERRAN, GEORGE HARRIS, FREDERICK HARTMAN and ASBURY W. RAY.
Henry married HANNAH A. HARVEY on August 4, 1865. They were divorced April 1, 1869 at Rushville, Rush County, Indiana. His second wife was NANCY JANE WEAVER whom he married December 18, 1869 at Bentonville, Indiana, by Enoch Caldwell, J.P.
Nancy was born August 2, 1839 at Bentonville, Indiana and died March 16, 1929, buried same cemetery. When the 1880 census was taken, Henry lived in Fayette County, Piney Township, Indiana. Children listed by Henry in his pension application on April 3, 1915 were:
1. James E. Philpott, born January 7, 1871, died June 22, 1949,(buried in Bentonville Cem), wife Mattie.
2. Della May Philpott, born May 12, 1872, She was deceased before April 1915.
3. Charles F. Philpott, born October 24, 1875, deceased before April 1915.
4. Luella Philpott, born September 4, 1879. She was the only child at home in 1900.
5. Minnie Daisey Bell Philpott, born January 9, 1881, was deceased before April 1915.
Others listed in Henry and Nancy's household in the 1880 census were: sister-in-law Martha Weaver, age 50, born in Indiana, a nephew James E. Weaver 23, born in Indiana, occupation laborer, and William Kich 32, born in Indiana. When the 1900 census was taken, Louella was still living with her parents. In 1920, Henry age 82 and Nancy age 80. MATTIE PHILPOTT signed Henry's Pension Application in 1924.
