Bernard J. "Butch" Scanlan, age 79, of Fennimore, WI passed away Thursday, September 16, 2021, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, WI due to complications of Covid-19. He was born on August 2, 1942, in Fennimore the son of Charles and Luella (Haas) Scanlan.

Bernard attended St. Mary's grade school and graduated from Fennimore High School in 1961. During his high school years, he met the love of his life, Sandra Waltz, on a blind date. He worked at the Stitzer Cheese Factory following graduation, and then served in the U.S. Army from 1964-1966 while stationed at Fort Lewis Washington. During his service, Bernard married Sandra on May 1, 1965, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Boscobel. She joined him in Tacoma, where they welcomed their first child. Upon discharge from the Army, they returned to Fennimore, and he began his 33-year career at John Deere in Dubuque, IA working as a radial drill operator. During that time, he also worked at the Fennimore Post Office as a maintenance worker. He was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus. Bernard was a faith-filled man who taught his children the importance of living their faith. Bernard was also a member of the Fennimore American Legion. He loved all Wisconsin sports teams, and it wasn't uncommon for him to plan his day around those games. He was often found cheering his children and grandchildren on at their various events. He was a kind and gentle man who would do anything for his friends and family and will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Although quiet by nature, those who knew him best enjoyed his fun-loving personality, humor and quick wit.

Bernard is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sandy, his children: Jeff Scanlan of Eau Claire, Kathy (Darren) Kreul of Fennimore, Jasen Scanlan of Fennimore, Kasey Scanlan of Fennimore, Kari (Max) Needham of Marion, IA, Jeron (Kelsey) Scanlan of Portage, 12 grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and a brother, Leo (Sandy) Scanlan of Benton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter-in-law Tammy Scanlan, brothers Leonard and Paul Scanlan, sister Rose Mary Scanlan, mother and father in-law Ed and Dorothy Waltz, sister-in-law Judith Waltz, and brother-in-law Ed Waltz, Jr.

The family would like to thank the doctors and nursing staff at Gundersen Hospitals in Boscobel and La Crosse for their excellent care of Bernard.
