Bruce attended Virginia Union Panthers in Richmond, Virginia where he played basketball and was a 2x first-team All-Central Intercollegiate Athlete on 1960 and 1961. When he got out of college his professional career started in 1961 and lasted until 1971. During this time he played for the New York/Philadelphia Tapers (1961-1963), the Trenton Colonials (1963-1966), the New Haven Elms (1966-1967), the New Jersey Americans (1967-1968) and the New Haven Elms / Hamden Bics (1968-1971). In 2008, Bruce was also inducted into the Virginia Union Hall of Fame, where his jersey number "30" was also retired. He passed away at The Haven Residential Home in Charles City, Va.
