Martha Lenhart Alston Daughtrey, 97, of Virginia Beach died September 10, 2021. Martha was born on July 10, 1924 in Odell (Halifax County), North Carolina to Robert M. Alston and Margaret Ritner Fimple Alston, the oldest of seven siblings. After attending Littleton High School, Martha matriculated at the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina in Greensboro (now UNC at Greensboro), graduating in 1946. Shortly after graduation she took a teaching position in Norfolk, Virginia at Blair Junior High School and followed that with a long career as an educator in the City of Virginia Beach.

Martha married Algie B. Daughtrey in 1949, and was celebrating 63 years of marriage at the time of Algie's death in 2013. She was the loving mother of R. Breckenridge (Robin) Daughtrey of Norfolk and Lawrence A. (Cathy) Daughtrey of Great Falls, Virginia, and the beloved grandmother of Benjamin A. and Anne (Annie) E. Daughtrey. Martha was predeceased by her siblings, Doris Neilsen, Virginia Chaffin, Linwood Alston, the Reverend Francis Alston and William Justice Alston, and is survived by her youngest sister, Charlotte Aycock, sisters-in-law, Doris Alston and Mary Daughtrey, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Martha loved gardening, quilting and needlepoint, was an excellent baker and loved to cook. She was an early and dedicated member of Thalia United Methodist Church. The family would like to extend their thanks to her devoted caregivers, Susie, Celeste and Marissa, who assisted Martha for many years, and to the Camellia staff at the Lake Taylor Transitional Hospital for the many years of care they provided. Martha worked hard her entire life and is now at rest with Jesus.

A graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday September 17, 2021 at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk by the Reverend Joe Varner.
