Reginald T. Butt

August 11, 1925 - October 25, 2019

Harbor City, CA - Reginald Trueman "Reggie" Butt, longtime Newburyport resident, died peacefully at home in Harbor City, Calif., on October 25, 2019. His family was by his side. Reggie and his late wife Ruth had relocated in 2008 to live with their son, Philip, in the Los Angeles area.

Born in Newburyport, Massachusetts, on August 11, 1925, Reggie was the son of the late Phil Butt and Margaret Morris Butt and was a graduate of Newburyport High School, class of 1943.

At 17, Reggie enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving as a signalman on ships throughout the Atlantic and Europe during WWII.

Reggie worked as a lobster fisherman as a young man, but later became a toolmaker when he discovered that one of his sons had a lobster allergy.

Like his father before him, Reggie was an avid fisherman and hunter. Much of his early years was spent on the Merrimack river, fishing and duck hunting. He also spent many years fly-fishing in the streams of New Hampshire and Maine. In his later years, he enjoyed fishing with his son Reggie in the streams of Colorado.

Reggie was a great husband, father, and friend. He will be missed by his eldest son, Reggie Butt of Las Vegas, Nev.; his youngest son, Philip Butt, of Harbor City, Calif.; his sister Alma Pingree, of Merrimac, Mass., and his many nieces, nephews, and in-laws throughout the country.

Per Reggie's wishes, he will be cremated in California. In the spring, his ashes will be taken to Newburyport by his two sons, where they will be mixed with the ashes of his beloved wife of 73 years, Ruth. Their ashes will be buried in a single urn in Highland Cemetery, Newburyport.
