Robert Lewis Bowers, 82, a resident of Britthaven of Wilkesboro, went to be with the Lord on September 19, 2005, after a period of declining health.

Mr. Bowers was born in Somers Township (Wilkes County) on September 24, 1922, to Lee Martin Bowers and Margaret Anderson Bowers. His mother died from complications of childbirth and his Aunt Louise Anderson Crow and Uncle Charlie Crow raised Robert.

Mr. Bowers, a lifelong resident of Wilkes, attended North Wilkesboro Elementary School and graduated from North Wilkesboro High School. He also attended Clevenger Business College in Wilkesboro.

Robert served with distinction in the Asiatic Pacific Campaign of World War II, earning two Bronze Star Medals. He also earned a Combat Medical Badge. He served in the Philippines, the Solomon Islands, and New Guinea. He was a part of the occupation force in Japan shortly after the Japanese surrender. He returned from Japan and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in January 1946 after his Uncle Charlie Crow died, and Robert came home to help provide for the family.

In April 1946, at age 23, he married Pansy Ruth Reeves of Millers Creek. They had one son, Robert Bruce Bowers.

Robert was a butcher at City Grocery on 10th Street. Then he joined the government as a USDA poultry inspector at Holly Farms. After retirement from the USDA, he worked at Robby's on "D" Street. He was also known as an accomplished leather craftsman.

After 48 years of marriage, his first wife, Pansy, passed away in 1994. In 1995 he married Pauline Poole Bowers, the widow of his deceased brother, Marvin Bowers. Pauline also died in 2003, the couple having been married eight years.

Brothers James Sterling Bowers, Lester Lee Bowers, Marvin Harold Bowers and sisters Ollie May Bowers, Mary Emily Bowers Anderson, Zetta Louise Bowers, and Myrtle Helena Bowers Griffin also preceded him in death.

Robert was a faithful member of Pleasant Home Baptist Church where he served for many years as a Sunday school teacher and deacon.
