Economist and educator. President of Yale University 1899-1921.
[his father was Prof. Dr. James Hadley; his mother was Miss Anne Twining.
Educated at the Hopkins Grammar School and Yale Univ., he worked for a time on the Railroad Gazette and the Financial Chronicle; he was Commissioner of State Statistics, 1885-87; became a professor in 1886, and Pres. of Yale in 1899. He has written on railroad transportation, economics, civics, public ethics, etc. He was also American editor of the Encyclo. Britannica and Roosevelt professor at Berlin 1907-08.
Recreations: lawn tennis and mountain-climbing.
Member of the French International Institute of Statistics, and of the Century Club in New York City.
