Jack Cooper Phelps

Jack Cooper Phelps was born March 20, 1932 in Laurel County, Kentucky; the son of the late Charlie and Millie Jones Phelps. He is survived by his wife of 67 years Jean Craig Phelps; five children Susan Phelps, Jacque Phelps and wife Vickie, Kerry Phelps and wife Jane, and Lisa Phelps Kuepfer and husband Joe, all of London, and Derek Phelps and wife Teri of Lexington; ten grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by seven older siblings: Willard, Gilmore, Jimmy, Horatio, J.B., Mona, and Nannie.

Jack was a graduate of London High School. He attended Western Kentucky University where he met his wife, Jean. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corp and was stationed in Korea. He was a sergeant at the time of his honorable discharge.

Jack and his wife, Jean are charter members of the First Presbyterian Church of London which held its first worship service in 1956. Jack served as an Elder and was active in Men's Fellowship, choir, and weekly prayer meetings. He served on several committees over the years and held positions such as treasurer.

He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service where he worked as a clerk and civil service examiner. Prior to retirement after three decades, he was a rural route carrier. Jack also tended to the farm where his family lived. He took pride in working the land and raising livestock. He cut and baled hay on the farm twice a year, as late as May 2021. He instilled the love of the land in his children.

Jack Cooper Phelps departed this life Monday, September 6, 2021 being 89 years, 5 months, and 17 days of age.

Funeral services for Jack Cooper Phelps will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in the Bowling Funeral Home Chapel with Sam Grigsby officiating. Live streaming of the service will be available via the Bowling Funeral Home website and Facebook page. Burial will follow in the A.R. Dyche Memorial Park in London. The family of Jack Cooper Phelps will receive friends at Bowling Funeral Home Friday beginning at 12 noon until the funeral hour of 2 p.m.
Pallbearers: Austin Phelps, Justin Phelps, Joshua Phelps, Shaun Robinson, and Greg Cowan.
