PORTLAND, Ore. -- Mr. Leslie E[llsworth] Abersold departed this life on Wednesday, May 27, 2009, in Portland, at the age of 90.

Funeral services will be held at Finley-Sunset Hills Mortuary, June 12, in Portland.
Les was born July 10, 1918, in New Raymer, Colo., to Louis and Vera Abersold. He was the oldest of three sons.

Les, or Mr. Abe, as he was also known, graduated from Lafayette High School and attended Central Methodist College.

In 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and received an honorable discharge as an Aviation Cadet. He then served three years in the U.S. Navy. In 1947 he returned to the U.S. Air Force, attaining the rank of CWO-4. After his service, he joined the Missouri Air National Guard as a Staff Sergeant with the 180th Bombardment Squadron and served until 1977, completing 34 years of combined military service.

In 1942 he married Drusilla Smith in San Diego, Calif. She preceded him in death on Nov. 15, 1988.

Les was a Christian and a member of King Hill Methodist Church and later Huffman Memorial Church. He loved to sing with the church choirs and sang many solos. He was a member of the St. Joseph Chapter of the of the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America, Inc., singing with them for many years.

Les was a 50 year member of Zeredatha No. 189 and a 32 Degree Scottish Rite Mason. Les was a Boy Scout leader and attended the National Boy Scout Ranch in Philmont, N.M., several times.

Les had a love for photography. After retiring, Les and Dru traveled extensively, taking cruises to Canada, Europe, Panama, and Asia. He combined his love of travel with taking pictures of cultures and nature. Les and Dru became "snow birds," spending their winters in Arizona.

In 1989, he married Alma Ford in Platte Woods, Mo. Les and Alma continued to travel, taking many cruises until moving to Portland. She preceded him in death on Feb. 22, 2006.

Les was a warm and loving husband, father, brother, and friend. He had a great sense of humor and will be missed by all that knew him.

His mother and father preceded him in death, as well as his two brothers, Jim and Allen.

Les is survived by two daughters: Leslie Euler, St. Joseph; Kathy (Wayne) Stiles, Lamar, Colo.; one stepson, Byron Ford (Zita Cohanciuc), Tigard, Ore.; grandchildren: Michelle (Michael) Miller, St. Joseph; Greg Stiles, Portland; Brad (Samantha) Stiles, Highland Ranch, Colo.; Patrick Ford, Tigard, Ore.; and one great-grandson, Jackson Stiles, Highland Ranch, Colo.

Memorials may be sent to Hospice Preferred Choice of St. Joseph.
