TWO SONS OF MINISTER DROWNED IN RACCOON
-------------------------------------
Martin and Garrett Hankie Lose Lives While Swimming in "Death Hole" --- J.A. Esey Nearly
Loses Life Attempting Rescue of Friends
---------------------
MARTIN HANKIE, 25 years old, and his brother, Garrett, 22 years old of Southeast Sixth and Allen streets, were drowned yesterday afternoon while swimming in the Racoon river directly over a deep hole from which the Hutchins Sand company has been pumping up sand.
Failing in an attempt to save the lives of his companions after risking his own, J. A. Estey notified the police, who recovered the bodies several hours afterward.
Estey said that he had been swimming with the Hankie boys all the afternoon, and had left the water when he heard them shout for help. He leaped into the water, and was seized by both men who nearly dragged him with them into "death hole," as the place has been called. Zern Stevens lost his life there May 26, and there have been many other accidents there.
It is thought that the brothers were tired and became victims of cramps. The two men were fellow employees of Estey at the Des Moines Union freight house. They are survived by their parents who live at Wiota, Ia., and the older brother leaves a widow. The bodies were removed to Newlen's undertaking rooms.
The father of the boys is the Rev. H. W. Hankie, pastor of the German church at Wiota, near Cumberland, Ia. The father did not learn of the death of his two sons until 8:30 o'clock this morning. No funeral arrangements will be made until after his arrival this afternoon.
