Fred A. Burkhalter, 92, of Jerome passed away July 4, 2018.

Fred was born on January 30, 1926 to Frank and Ethel Burkhalter in Yellow Medicine County, Granite Falls, Minnesota.

In 1929, he moved to Twin Falls, Idaho and in January of 1931 his family moved to Jerome, Idaho. He resided in Jerome, until February 2014, when he moved into Bridgeview Estates in Twin Falls. He went to school in Jerome, graduating in 1944, entered the US Navy, and was discharged in 1946. After discharging from the navy Fred attended the University of Idaho. While there he sang with the Vandeleer Chorus, singing tenor. He returned to Jerome after one year to help run the family business. He and his brother Dale worked for the family business, Burkhalter's Inc., for 24 years, selling out in 1969.

He married Phyllis Reddish on June 17, 1951. They were blessed with two daughters, Marilyn and Lori . They were married for 52 years. Phyllis passed away in Jan. 2004. They were members of the Jerome Presbyterian Church and Fred continued to sing there until 2017. While in high school he sang in a barbershop quartet. He also sang in a quartet formed of other church choir members. They were called the BeeDleeBums. He became a lifelong member of SPEBSQSA. He sang with the Gem State Four and then sang for 33 years with the Commontaters, the quartet with A-peal. The Common-Taters received an award from the city of Twin Falls and from the National BBshop Society for the longest running quartet with the same four members. That quartet was formed with three men from Buhl.
After selling the warehouse, Fred worked for Farm Service in Kimberly, Idaho and for Pacific Supply Co-op in sales. After early retirement, he worked for First Interstate Bank as an ag rep. He worked there 7 years, covering southern and Eastern Idaho. After heart surgery in 1995, he retired and began traveling with Phyllis in their 5th wheel. They spent several months in Arizona as snowbirds each year.

Fred taught skiing at Soldier Mountain in Fairfield and was able to teach both of his girls to ski. He also taught at Magic Mountain south of Twin Falls. He started playing golf at the age of 14 and it was a sport he enjoyed for more years than can be counted. He won first place in the first flight at the JCC Club Championship. He received an award from Northwest Plant Foods association for outstanding service. Fred was president of the Jerome Rotary club, Barbershopper of the year for the TF Magichords in 1985 and 2006, board of directors at the JCC, a member in good standing with the Masons Jerome Lodge #61 A.F. & A.M, a member of the American Legion Post 46,and was an elder and deacon at the Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his daughter, Marilyn (Jim) Rountree and 4 grandchildren, Jennifer Rountree, Josh (Leandra) Rountree, Paige (Michael) Thomson-White, and Taylor(Sam) Knutson; 3 great-grandchildren, Rylee and Cooper Rountree, and Wesley White. He is also survived by his sister, Inez(Kenneth) Crothers, his sister in law, Allene Solasobol, and his brother in law, Rick Reddish, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Phyllis, his brothers, Delbert and Dale Burkhalter, and his daughter, Lori Burkhalter Thomson.He would like to thank the staff of Bridgeview.
He would also like to thank the Vision Hospice staff for their help and care; Ginger Hatchett and Carol Henry.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, Aug. 9, 2018 at 2:00 pm at First Presbyterian Church in Jerome. Services will conclude at the church. Private family inurnment with Fred being buried beside his wife, Phyllis, at Sunset Memorial Park will be held prior to the Celebration of Life. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Hospice Visions of Twin Falls, Idaho. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Demaray's Jerome Memorial Chapel.
