His mother was Jane Chambers Steel Hart (b. 1742-1744, d. 1825). She was probably buried in Apple Creek Cemetery, Cape Girardeau, MO. Robert and Mary Gilliland had at least four children; Rebecca P. Steel McKee (b.1816, d. 1880), John Andrew Jackson Steel (b. 1818, d. 1824), Mary Flinn Steel Henderson (b. 1820, d. 1852)and Baby Steel. This family spelled their name without the final "e", unlike their ancestors.

Church records indicate that Robert was the first person to be buried in Apple Creek Cemetery. There were three other deaths recorded in church records that predate Robert, but records indicate two were buried elsewhere and the third is unknown.
