--He was the son of Ralph G. Abernathy and wife Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" Cochran. Fred was only 5 years old when his father died. His mother then married William T. Mullis.
--Fred married Lillian Rushing. They had sons Larry Grier Abernathy and Jerry Wayne Abernathy.
