Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Lutheran Church of Peace, Platteville, with the Rev. Jeff Pedersen officiating. Military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 42 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5274 at the church. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Platteville. Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Melby-Bendorf Funeral Home, Platteville. Friends also may call after 10 a.m. Friday at the church.
She was born on May 11, 1922, in Yakima, Wash., daughter of Sam and Maude (Hummel) Kiefer. She married Charles W. Benson on Dec. 27, 1943, in Pasadena, Calif.; he preceded her in death on April 9, 2002.
Betty served our country during World War II in the Army Nurse Corps as a 2nd lieutenant.
She worked as director of nursing for DeKalb County, Ill., Tuberculosis Clinic. Prior to that she worked at the Sycamore Hospital, Sycamore, Ill.
She and Charles moved to Platteville in 1974, where they farmed in Smelser Township. She was a member of the Lutheran Church of Peace, Platteville, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Veteran's of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and the Military Officers Association of America.
Surviving are three children, Richard Benson, of Platteville, Susan (Phillip) McGill, of East Peoria, Ill.; Nancy (Peter) Bryant, of Scio, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Jessica (Chris) Nunley, Karie (Ryan) Gill, Erin (Matt) Hutson, Annie Bryant and Paul Bryant; six great-grandchildren; and a brother, Warren Kiefer, of Grand Junction, Colo.
